Maurice Podbrey

Maurice Podbrey was born in South Africa and trained for the theatre in Britain. In 1966 he was invited to join the staff of the National Theatre School in Montreal. In 1969 he founded the Centaur Theatre Company, which became one of Canada’s major regional theatres. At the Centaur he was instrumental in introducing the work of Athol Fugard to Canadian audiences, and also in developing new Canadian writing by authors such as David Fennario. He was given an Honorary Doctorate by Montreal’s Concordia University and in 1991 received the Order of Canada.
